The Story of The Season

A few months again my wife and I binged watched the show Brigerton on Netflix. I was fascinated by the strategy of trying to find a worthwhile suitor. These ladies used their influence, prestige, rumors – anything they could do to come up with an advantage in the goal of securing a proposal. They were vicious with each other! And I thought that this kind of epic battle seemed like it would make a great game!

I started by making a computer game version for a single player, but I soon realized that a game like this was better served by having real competitors. It seemed like a perfect fit for a fast-paced card game. I jotted down some ideas and brainstormed a bit with some friends. Eventually, I created a prototype with some paper cards.

At this time I found a company called The Game Crafter that makes games with real components. After I thought the game was in a good place, I created all the artwork for the cards, wrote up a rulebook, made a video, and decided to sell it.

It’s called The Season, and the description I came up with is this:

In this fast-paced, competitive card game, attracting a suitor requires more than simply batting one’s pretty eyelashes. There are plenty of other ladies out there all attempting to do the same thing, and competition is fierce. Fortunately, you have been preparing for this moment since you were a little girl.

You must heighten your Appearance, hone your Talents, increase the standing of your Family, and do what you can to establish a strong Dowry. After all, it is only the young lady who possesses these attributes in abundance that can ever hope to secure the best marriage proposals.

So get to it, Ladies! The Season is upon us, and you have much work to do!
